What the Washington designs show

The Capitol dome in blue engraving, flag flying, with pink cherry blossom branches drawn across both bottom corners so the building sits inside them. Two inks, cream stock, and a lot of very fine line work in the colonnade.

The blossom is doing real work here: it dates the card to a fortnight in spring, which is more than most city fronts manage to say.

When people send one

Late March and early April for the blossom, and the school-trip season either side of it. A card sent by a fourteen-year-old from a class trip is the version of this most people remember receiving.

The other common sender is somebody in town for two days of meetings who never leaves a four-block radius. A card is the piece of that trip which reaches anybody else, and it takes about the length of one delayed flight to write.
