Milwaukee postcards, printed and mailed

Milwaukee is a lake city that most people underestimate until they stand on the shore. The front the designers chose is the building that changed how the city sees itself.

What the Milwaukee designs show

The art museum on the lakefront with its brise soleil open like a pair of wings, the cable-stayed footbridge running in from the left, Lake Michigan drawn as engraved ripples underneath and a gold sun low behind it.

It is the one modern building in the whole catalogue treated the way the older cities get treated — all line work, no photography. The wings are what make it recognisable at thumbnail size.

When people send one

Summer festival season on the lakefront, and autumn game weekends. This is a city with a strong sense of itself, and cards from here often go to people who used to live here.

Cards also go out during the state fair weeks in August, and from the lake crossings. Anybody taking the ferry over to Michigan has a few hours with nothing to do, which turns out to be ideal postcard weather.

Or use your own Milwaukee photo

A frozen shoreline in February, a tavern, a brewery tour. The lake in winter is the most Milwaukee photograph there is, and it is not on the front.
