San Diego postcards, printed and mailed

San Diego is the most consistently pleasant city in America and the hardest to photograph interestingly, because nothing ever looks dramatic. The design solves that with a curve.

What the San Diego designs show

The Coronado Bridge sweeping in from the right on its line of pillars, drawn in blue engraving, with the bay underneath, the downtown skyline low on the horizon and three orange palms on the near shore.

The bridge curve is what gives the front its movement. Without it this would be a flat blue horizon, which is the trap every photograph of this bay falls into.

When people send one

All year, but especially the summer family weeks and the run of conferences that fill the convention centre. This is a city people extend a work trip in.

The other reliable sender here is the military family. San Diego has one of the largest naval populations in the country, and a card to a relative in another state is still the ordinary way news travels in a lot of those households.

Or use your own San Diego photo

A pier, a taco stand, a seal on a rock at La Jolla. The animals are the photograph people actually keep.
