Seattle postcards, printed and mailed

Seattle has a skyline nobody draws and two shapes everybody does. The designs use both, and one of them puts the entire city on the front as a map.

What the Seattle designs show

The Space Needle in green engraving with Mount Rainier drawn behind it, firs along the bottom left, and small orange raindrops falling across the whole card — a joke that lands immediately.

The portrait front is a drawn map with labelled vignettes: the Space Needle, the Pike Place Market sign, a ferry, a salmon, a coffee cup, an orca tail, an evergreen and Mount Rainier. Nine things, all correct, and it works as an object even before it is read.

When people send one

Summer, when the mountain is out and the city is at its best, and the Alaska cruise season either side of it — Seattle is where a great many of those trips begin and end.

A card sent from here at the start of a cruise arrives home before the ship does, which is a small pleasure for whoever opens it and the reason people write on the pier rather than at sea.

Or use your own Seattle photo

The market at opening, a ferry wake, the mountain from a plane window. The rain is already covered on the front.
