What the Baltimore designs show
The USS Constellation at her berth in the Inner Harbor, three masts drawn in navy line work with the name lettered across the stern, the glass pyramids of the aquarium behind her, and a red crab claw coming in from the bottom corner.
Rigging is the ideal subject for an engraving — every line is already a line. A photograph of the same ship turns the masts into a grey tangle at postcard size.
When people send one
Summer weekends, and crab season with them. Baltimore is also a common stop on a longer drive up or down the coast, and a card is how that kind of stop gets remembered at all.
A good number are sent from the stadium. Baseball here is a day out that people travel for, and a card written in a seat before the first pitch has a charm that a photograph of the scoreboard does not.
