What the New York designs show
The main front is a navy pennant reading NEW YORK, with four engraved vignettes set around it: an apple, a chequered yellow cab, the Brooklyn Bridge with the skyline behind it, and a hot dog. Drawn rather than photographed, in two inks on cream.
It is a deliberately unserious front, and that is why it works. Nobody needs another aerial view of Manhattan, and the person opening the envelope can tell at a glance that a human chose this.
When people send one
December, overwhelmingly. A card mailed from a Christmas trip to New York arrives while the tree is still up, which is most of the reason to send one.
The rest are from first visits. There is a particular impulse, about three days into a first trip to New York, to tell somebody at home about it on paper.
