What the Raleigh designs show
Two enormous oaks drawn in navy at either edge of the card, framing the downtown skyline and the domed State Capitol between them, with a red sun and halftone clouds behind the towers.
The framing is what makes this front work. Raleigh has a small skyline, and putting trees the same height as the towers on both sides is a more honest picture of the city than a wide shot would be.
When people send one
Graduation season, in a state with a great many universities close together, and spring, when the whole city is under pollen and everybody mentions it.
The universities and the companies around them produce a particular kind of card: somebody has taken a job here, and the postcard is how that news reaches an aunt who does not use email.
