San Francisco postcards, printed and mailed

San Francisco is the rare city whose most obvious view is also its best one, and the designs do not pretend otherwise. Pick a front, write the back, and we mail it.

What the San Francisco designs show

The Golden Gate Bridge, inked in the orange-red it is actually painted, with the headland under one tower and a bank of blue engraved fog rolling in beneath the deck. The fog is drawn as line work, which is a far better way to render it than a camera manages.

Everything is line and halftone dot on cream paper — closer to a 1940s travel poster than a photograph, and it survives being printed at postcard size without going muddy.

When people send one

September and October, when the fog lifts and the city has its actual summer. Also the whole conference season, when a lot of people are here for four days and see one neighbourhood.

Cards from here also go out at the start of a longer California drive, since a great many trips begin at this airport and end several hundred miles south. The first night is when people still have the energy to write.

Or use your own photo

A hill that defeated you, a sea lion, the queue outside a bakery. Personal beats iconic on a postcard, and the printing is identical either way.
